Registration Forms Tutorial

Application forms for registration of purebred and crossbred Finn ewes and rams may be downloaded in Microsoft Word or Adobe Acrobat format from this page. Forms may also be obtained from the Associated Sheep Registries Office in Milo, Iowa by calling 641-942-6402 or writing to Finnsheep Breeders Assn., 15603 173rd Street, Milo, IA 50166. Be sure to specify forms for Finnsheep ewes and rams. Forms will be sent to you via U.S. Mail.

The application for registration form for Purebred Ewes is shown as a sample. However, the forms for Purebred Rams, Cross-bred Ewes, and Cross-bred Rams are all completed in the same way.

Ewes lambs to be registered are all listed on the ewe form. Rams lambs must be listed on the ram form. Up to 8 lambs can be listed per form. Note that there is a space for sire and dam on each line. This means that ewe lambs from different litters can be listed on the same form, as long as all the breeder information is the same.

Sheep can be registered at any age as long as both parents are aleady registered. However, the registration fee for an animal over 12 months of age is doubled. A lamb / sheep may only be registered by its breeder. A buyer may not register a lamb / sheep.

REGISTRATION FEES

(This information is printed on the back of the Application for Registration forms.)

Purebred ewe or ram: $6 each.
1/2 Finn X: $2 each
3/4 Finn X: $6 each
7/8 Finn X: $6 each

*Double these amounts to register a sheep over 12 months of age.
**Double these amounts for non-members or if annual activity fee has not been paid for the year.

1. Bred by: (owner of dam at time of mating)
This space is for the name, address and email for the owner of the dam (mother of the lambs) when she was bred. This is may or may not be the same person who owns the dam at the time that the lambs were born.

2. Owner of dam at time of birth:
This listing is for the owner of the dam at the time she gave birth to the lambs. In the case of someone that breeds a ewe and still owns her at the time she lambs, #1 and #2 are the same. BUT, if an individual purchased a ewe that was already bred (pregnant) he would list himself as #2 and the seller of the bred ewe under #1.

ANIMAL TO BE REGISTERED

3. For office use only:
This area is for the use of the registration office in Milo, IA. Please do not write in this space.

4. Sheep name (optional) & ear tag number:
This column is for the lamb's ear tag number. It can be the number from its farm tag or SFCP (Scrapie Flock Certification Program) tag. It should be the method used by the breeder for identifying the sheep in his records. In a flock where the sheep are also given names, the lamb's name may also be listed in this space and will be recorded on the registration papers.

5. Date born:
This is the date that the lamb being registered was born.

6. Litter size:
Number of lambs in the litter recorded as a number. (For example, record "3" for triplets.) This is the original number of lambs in the litter, not the number of surviving lambs should one die.

7. Color:
This is the genotype (genetic color) of the lamb. For example, "a fading black" which appears dark grey or brown, should still be recorded as black. Examine the color of the pigment on the eye rims and tongue if you are not certain. It is important to accurately record the genetic color on the pedigree as it indicates the possible colors of future progeny. Codes to be used in this area are: W=white, BL=black, BR=brown, G=grey, F=fawn, PIE = piebald.

Piebald lambs have white spots on the wooly part of the body. A lamb that appears to have white wool with black spots is genetically a black sheep with an enormous white spot and should be registered as such. Often spotting on the wool is most apparent at birth when the wool is very short. Disregard spots on the face and legs, which are controlled by a different gene. In the case of piebald (spotted wool), please indicate BL-W or BR-W.
