IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Regarding the Registration of Finnsheep
Understanding this information can prevent many problems for you in the future.
A Finnsheep can ONLY be registered by its breeder. As a buyer, you cannot register a sheep that you have purchased. The breeder must register the sheep and transfer that registration to you.
Only the offspring of registered parents are able to be registered. Being a purebred and being registered are not the same thing. If you want to produce and sell registered Finnsheep, at any time in the future, be sure to purchase breeding stock that are registered and that you are entering into a contract with the seller to buy lambs/sheep with FBA registration papers.
If all four grandparents of a sheep that you wish to buy are registered and the parents are not, ONLY the breeder of each of the parents may register them. (Even sheep who are deceased may be registered. Registration fees for animals over one year of age are double the usual amount.) Only after both parents are registered can the resulting lamb/sheep be registered.
If you are interested in purchasing a lamb/sheep in which one or both parents are not registered yet, but are thought to be registerable, it is strongly suggested that you ask the seller to take care of this paperwork before you purchase and take posession of the lamb/sheep that you want. The sale will be a motivating factor for the seller to take care of this paperwork in a timely manner. For more information on purchasing Finnsheep, read our document on Buying Sheep.

Please note: The “Breeding Up” Program, established with the origin of the association, was terminated on January 1, 1991 (for any animal born after 1/1/91). This program permitted the registration of 15/16 as purebred Finnsheep. "Breeding up" is a common practice when introducing a new breed into a country. It allows the breed to become established without becoming too inbred. By 1991, it was felt that the gene pool of purebred Finnsheep in the U.S. was large enough for inbreeding to be avoided and this program was discontinued.
The FBA continues to allow the registration of crossbred Finnsheep as Class II. Some of the new sheep breeds (such as Polypay) contain Finnsheep as one of their component breeds. This allows those interested in these new breeds to document the Finn heritage of their sheep.
